ABOUT US

Mary's Ward siblings are activists following in the footsteps of Jesus and Mary, Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin, and others, utilizing nonviolent resistance to champion social and spiritual evolution to hasten God's kingdom of heaven on earth.

  • "A spiritual religion of humanity is the hope of the future. By this is not meant what is ordinarily called a universal religion, a system, a thing of creed and intellectual belief and dogma and outward rite ... A religion of humanity means the growing realisation that the secret Spirit, a divine Reality, in which we are all one, that humanity is its highest present vehicle on earth, that the human race and the human being are the means by which it will progressively reveal itself here.  It implies a growing attempt to live out this knowledge and bring about a kingdom of this divine Spirit upon earth." Sri Aurobindo, The Ideal of Human Unity, 577-578

  • "This is called in the language of Christ bringing down the kingdom of heaven on earth, or in modern language, realizing and effectuating God in the world." Sri Aurobindo, The Hour of God, 27

  • "The thing to do right now is to create a new society within the shell of the old with the philosophy of the new," Peter Maurin, Easy Essays

  • "War, capital punishment, the taking of human life, cruelty of all kinds ... the degradation of any human being or any class of human beings ... the oppression and exploitation of man [human] by man [human], of class by class, of nation by nation ...  which religion and ethics formerly tolerated or even favoured in practice, are crimes against the religion of humanity, abominable to its ethical mind, forbidden by its primary tenets, to be fought against always, in no degree to be tolerated.  Man [human] must be sacred to man [human] regardless of all distinctions of race, colour, nationality, status, political or social advancement.  The body of man [each human] is to be respected, made immune from violence and outrage, fortified by science against disease and preventable death.  The life of man [each human] is to be held sacred, preserved, strengthened, ennobled, uplifted.  The heart of man [each human] is to be held sacred also, given scope, protected from violation, from suppression, from mechanisation, freed from belittling influences.  The mind of man [each human] is to be released from all bonds, allowed freedom and range and opportunity, given all its means of self-training and self-development and organised in the play of its powers for the service of humanity.  And all this too is not to be held as an abstract or pious sentiment, but given full and practical recognition in the persons of men [humans] and nations and manking [humankind].  This, speaking largely, is the idea and spirit of the intellectual religion of humanity." Sri Aurobindo, The Ideal of Human Unity, 565-566

ABOUT US

Jesus and Mary

Sri Aurobindo and The Mother

Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin

is our paradigm.  Non-dogmatic Catholic Christianity, the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, the Vedic vision, and strategic nonviolent resistance are among our means.  Mutual aid, corporal and spiritual works of mercy, alternative social institutions, urban and rural farming and gardening, and tactical frivolity are our tools.  Education, agriculture, and the arts are our fields of action.
